How do I convert a PDF to PNG for free?
To convert a PDF to PNG for free, open PDFChai PDF to PNG, drop in your PDF, pick a resolution (72, 150 or 300 DPI) and the pages you want — all of them, or a range such as 1-3,5 — then click Convert to PNG. Each page becomes a lossless PNG image named page-1-pdfchai.png, page-2-pdfchai.png and so on, which you can save one at a time or together as a single ZIP. The conversion runs entirely in your browser, so the PDF is never uploaded, and there is no signup or watermark.

What is a PDF to PNG Converter?
A PDF to PNG converter turns the pages of a PDF into PNG images — one picture file per page. PNG (Portable Network Graphics) is a lossless format: every pixel is stored exactly as it was rendered, without the blurry halos and blocky artefacts that JPG compression adds around letters and sharp edges. That makes PNG the right choice for pages full of text, diagrams, charts, line drawings, screenshots and logos, where crisp edges matter more than the smallest possible file.
PDFChai's converter uses Mozilla's open-source pdf.js engine to draw each page inside your browser at the resolution you choose — 72 DPI for quick previews, 150 DPI for sharp on-screen images, or 300 DPI for print-quality output (an A4 page becomes 2480 × 3508 pixels). You can convert every page or only a range such as 1-3,5, and optionally keep the page background transparent. Pages are processed one at a time, and your PDF is never uploaded to a server.
The trade-off is size: PNG files are usually larger than JPGs, especially for pages that contain photographs or scans. If your PDF is mostly photos, or you need the smallest files for email, PDF to JPG is often the better pick. For everything else — documentation, slides, forms, technical drawings or images you plan to edit further — PNG keeps the quality intact. It is free, needs no signup, adds no watermark and works in any modern browser.

Step-by-Step Guide
Everything you need to know — done in under a minute.
Add your PDF
Drop a PDF onto the box or click to browse. The file is opened locally, and the tool shows how many pages it has plus the pixel size page 1 will have at the selected resolution. Nothing is uploaded.
Choose resolution and pages
Select 72 DPI for small previews and thumbnails, 150 DPI for sharp screen images, or 300 DPI for printing and OCR. Keep All pages, or type a selection such as 1-3,5,8-10 to convert only what you need.
Decide on the background
Leave the default white background for documents that will be viewed or printed as ordinary pages. Tick Transparent background when you want logos, icons or diagrams that sit cleanly on coloured slides or web pages.
Convert and download
Click Convert to PNG. Pages are rendered one after another with a progress bar, and each appears as a thumbnail with its pixel size and file size. Download any page on its own as page-<n>-pdfchai.png, or grab everything at once as pdf-pages-pdfchai.zip.
How Does It Work?
Understanding what happens behind the scenes helps you trust the tool — especially with confidential files.
📥 Local file reading
Your browser reads the PDF straight from your disk using the File API. The bytes stay in memory on your device; no network request carries your document anywhere.
🖥️ Rendering at your chosen DPI
PDF pages are measured in points (72 per inch), so pdf.js draws each page onto an HTML canvas at DPI ÷ 72 times its natural size. With the transparent option, the canvas is not pre-filled with white, so only what the page actually paints becomes opaque.
🗜️ Lossless PNG encoding
The canvas is saved with the browser's built-in PNG encoder. PNG compression is lossless, so the image is pixel-for-pixel identical to the rendered page. The canvas is then released before the next page starts, which keeps memory use low.
📦 ZIP packaging in the browser
When you click Download all as ZIP, JSZip bundles the PNG files into a single archive in memory and hands it to your browser to save. Nothing is stored online, and everything is cleared when you close the tab.
Key Features & Advantages
Lossless quality

Who Uses This Tool?
This is one of the most common document tasks in work, study and everyday life. Here are the people who use it every day.
🎨 Designers
Export logos, icons and vector artwork that was delivered as a PDF into transparent PNGs ready for Figma, Canva, Photoshop or a website.
💻 Developers & technical writers
Turn diagrams, architecture drawings and documentation pages into crisp PNGs for README files, wikis, tickets and help-centre articles.
📊 Presenters & marketers
Place a chart, table or infographic page into PowerPoint, Keynote or Google Slides as a sharp image that won't smear when it is projected.
🏗️ Engineers & architects
Convert CAD exports, schematics and floor plans — where thin lines and tiny labels must stay legible — into lossless images for review and markup.
🎓 Teachers & students
Make clear images of worksheets, maths problems and lecture slides for learning platforms, flashcards or printed handouts.
🔍 Anyone preparing OCR
Feed 300 DPI lossless PNGs to text-recognition software, which generally reads clean, artefact-free images more accurately than heavily compressed JPGs.
Common Use Cases
The everyday situations that bring people to this tool.
🖼️ Logos and icons with transparency
Brand assets are often shared as PDFs. Convert with a transparent background to get a PNG logo you can place on any colour.
📑 Slides and documentation
Insert a page as an image into a presentation, wiki or knowledge base where embedding a PDF isn't possible.
🌐 Websites and blogs
Show a document preview, certificate or infographic on a web page as a crisp PNG that every browser can display.
✏️ Editing in an image editor
Bring a page into Photoshop, GIMP or Canva for annotation or design work without inheriting JPG artefacts.
🖨️ Print-ready page images
Use 300 DPI PNGs when a print service or layout app asks for high-resolution images instead of a PDF.
✂️ Exporting a single figure
First trim the page down to one chart or diagram with Crop PDF, then convert it here — only the cropped area ends up in the PNG.
How to Use It on Any Device
Works on every platform, right in the browser. Here are instructions for the most common devices.
🪟 How to convert PDF to PNG on Windows

Works on: All Chromebooks · Chrome
Tips & Best Practices
✅ Pick PNG for text and graphics, JPG for photos
PNG keeps text and line art razor-sharp but produces bigger files. For photo-heavy or scanned pages, PDF to JPG gives much smaller images with little visible difference.
✅ 150 DPI is the sweet spot for screens
It produces clean, readable images for slides, websites and chat apps. Save 300 DPI for printing or OCR, where the extra detail is actually used.
✅ Convert only the pages you need
Typing a range such as 2-4,7 saves time and memory, especially at 300 DPI on long documents.
✅ Know when transparency works
The transparent option skips the default white fill, but scanned pages and PDFs that draw their own white rectangle will still look white — that white is part of the page itself.
✅ Unlock protected PDFs first
If a PDF needs a password to open, remove it with Unlock PDF and then convert the unlocked copy.
✅ Need the words, not a picture?
A PNG is an image, so its text can't be searched or edited. Use PDF to Text or PDF to Word when you need editable content.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is PDF to PNG free?
Yes. It is completely free, with no signup, no watermark and no cap on pages or files.
Is my PDF uploaded anywhere?
No. Every page is rendered and encoded inside your browser. The PDF and the PNG images never leave your device.
What is the difference between PNG and JPG?
PNG is lossless, so text, lines and flat colours stay perfectly sharp, and it supports transparency. JPG is lossy: it makes much smaller files and suits photographs, but adds soft artefacts around sharp edges. Choose PNG for documents and graphics, and JPG for photos or when file size matters most.
Which DPI should I choose?
72 DPI gives small previews (an A4 page is about 595 × 842 pixels). 150 DPI suits screens, slides and websites (about 1240 × 1754). 300 DPI is print quality and best for OCR (2480 × 3508), with four times as many pixels as 150 DPI, so files are much larger.
Can I convert only some pages?
Yes. Choose Only these and type a selection such as 1-3,5 or 2,4,6-9. Only those pages are rendered, which is faster and uses less memory.
How does the transparent background work?
By default every page is drawn on white. With Transparent background ticked, the white fill is skipped, so empty areas of the page become transparent in the PNG. Scanned pages and PDFs that paint their own white background will still appear white, because that colour is part of the page content.
Why are my PNG files so large?
PNG stores every pixel without loss, so a 300 DPI page — and especially a page with photos or a scan — can be several megabytes. Use 150 DPI, or switch to PDF to JPG for photo-heavy documents, to get smaller files.
How do I download all pages at once?
Click Download all as ZIP. The images are bundled into pdf-pages-pdfchai.zip right in your browser; unzip it to get page-1-pdfchai.png, page-2-pdfchai.png and so on.
Is there a page limit?
There is no fixed limit. Pages are rendered one at a time to keep memory low, but long documents at 300 DPI can take a while and use a lot of memory, so a desktop browser is best for those. Very large pages, such as posters, may be rendered at a slightly lower DPI to stay within the browser's image size limit — the tool tells you when that happens.
Can I convert a password-protected PDF?
If the PDF needs a password to open, unlock it first with Unlock PDF, then convert the unlocked file.
Will the text in the PNG be searchable?
No. A PNG is a picture of the page, so the text can't be selected or searched. To get editable text, use PDF to Text or PDF to Word.
Does it work on mobile?
Yes. It runs in Chrome on Android and Safari on iPhone and iPad. Phones have less memory than computers, so 72 or 150 DPI is recommended for long documents.
