What is PDF redaction?
Redaction means permanently removing sensitive information from a document before you share it: an Aadhaar or PAN number on a form, a phone number on a CV, account numbers on a bank statement, a client's name in a report, or salary figures in a contract. Done properly, the hidden information is not just covered, it is gone.
That distinction matters because the most common mistake is to draw a black rectangle in a PDF editor or highlight text in black. The box looks convincing, but the words are still in the file underneath: anyone can select and copy them, search for them, or simply delete the box. Real redaction must remove the content itself. PDFChai does this by re-drawing every page that has a redaction as a flat image with solid boxes burned in, so the covered text, images and graphics no longer exist in the output. Pages without redactions are copied exactly as they were.

🔎 Finding sensitive data
pdf.js reads the text of each page with exact positions. Your words and the selected patterns (emails, phone numbers, PAN, Aadhaar, card numbers) are matched line by line, and each match gets a box sized to the characters, with a safety margin.
⬛ Burning the boxes in
Each marked page is drawn at 200 dpi, the boxes are painted on top, and that picture replaces the page. The original text and images on that page are not copied, so nothing remains under the boxes. The characters that lie outside the boxes are then written back as an invisible text layer, so the rest of the page can still be searched and copied; characters under a box are never written.
🧹 A clean document
Unmarked pages are copied unchanged into a brand-new PDF. Bookmarks, document properties, attachments and scripts from the original are not carried over.

Is the redacted information really removed?
Yes. Each page with a redaction is re-drawn as a flat image with the boxes burned in, and the original page content is not copied. The covered text can't be selected, searched or recovered by deleting the box.
Is my PDF uploaded anywhere?
No. Everything happens in your browser, so a document full of personal details never leaves your device.
Can I still search and copy text on redacted pages?
Yes. The page itself is flattened into an image, which is what guarantees the hidden text is gone, but every character outside the boxes is written back as an invisible text layer, so searching and copying keep working. Only scanned pages have no text to put back; tick “Also OCR the redacted pages” for those.
What can the automatic search find?
Any words or phrases you type (separate several with commas), plus email addresses, phone numbers, PAN, Aadhaar and card numbers. It reads the text layer, so it can't see text inside photos or on scanned pages; draw boxes there by hand.
Does it redact text in scanned PDFs?
You can draw boxes on scanned pages and they will be burned in. Search can't find words on a scan, because there is no text layer. You can run OCR PDF first if you want to search a scan.
Will the file size change?
Pages with redactions become images, so a text-only page may grow to a few hundred kilobytes. Pages without redactions stay the same size. Use Compress PDF if needed.
What happens to bookmarks, links and form fields?
The redacted file is a fresh document: bookmarks, document properties and attachments are not copied. On flattened pages, links and form fields are gone too; unmarked pages keep their links.
Can I use white boxes instead of black?
Yes. Choose White under Box colour. The content is removed either way; white is useful when you don't want obvious black bars.
Can redaction be undone?
Not in the redacted file. That is the point of redaction. Your original file is not changed, so keep it somewhere safe.
Can I redact a password-protected PDF?
Unlock it first with Unlock PDF using the password you know, then redact the unlocked copy.
