How do I repair a corrupted PDF online for free?
To repair a damaged PDF for free, open PDFChai's Repair PDF tool and drop the file in. It first rewrites the file with qpdf, which rebuilds a broken cross-reference table and trailer. If that is not enough, it copies every readable page into a new PDF with pdf.js and pdf-lib, and as a last resort it rebuilds the readable pages as images. You then see which method worked and how many pages were recovered, and you download yourfile-repaired-pdfchai.pdf. Everything runs in your browser, so the file is never uploaded. The tool fixes structural damage, but it cannot bring back content that is missing from the file.

What Does It Mean to Repair a PDF?
A PDF is not one continuous block of text. It is a collection of numbered objects — pages, fonts, images and content streams — followed by a cross-reference (xref) table that records the exact byte position of every object, and a trailer that points to the document catalog. PDF readers start at the end of the file and use those positions to find everything else. If a download stops early, a sync app truncates the file, an editor crashes while saving or an email gateway alters the bytes, the positions no longer line up and readers show errors such as “The file is damaged and could not be repaired” or “Failed to load PDF document”.
PDFChai's Repair PDF tries three methods in order and stops as soon as one recovers every readable page. First, qpdf, compiled to WebAssembly, rewrites the file: when the xref table is broken it scans the whole file for objects and rebuilds the table and trailer from scratch. If that is not enough, pdf.js — the tolerant engine behind Firefox's PDF viewer — checks which pages can still be read, and pdf-lib copies them into a brand-new document. As a last resort, each page that pdf.js can read is rendered to an image and assembled into a new PDF. A summary shows which method worked, how many pages were recovered and any warnings.
It is important to be honest about the limits. A repair tool fixes structure: a broken xref table, a truncated trailer, wrong byte offsets or incorrect stream lengths. It cannot recover content that is missing. If half of the file was never downloaded, the pages stored in that half are gone, and a file overwritten with zeros has nothing left to rebuild. Everything runs in your browser, so the file is never uploaded. It is free, needs no signup, adds no watermark and works on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS and Chromebook.

Step-by-Step Guide
Everything you need to know — done in under a minute.
Add the damaged PDF
Drop the file onto the box or click to browse. Before anything else the tool checks that it really contains PDF data. If it is actually a web page, a Word file or an image renamed to .pdf, you are told straight away instead of getting a meaningless "repair".
Let the repair methods run
Method 1 rewrites the file with qpdf. If the result is missing pages or qpdf cannot read the file, Method 2 rebuilds it page by page with pdf.js and pdf-lib, and Method 3 rebuilds the readable pages as images. A progress list shows which method is running and whether it succeeded.
Review the repair summary
The summary shows the method that worked, how many pages were recovered compared with how many were detected, whether the text is still selectable, the new file size and the technical warnings — for example a reconstructed cross-reference table.
Download and check the repaired file
Click Download repaired PDF to save yourfile-repaired-pdfchai.pdf. Open it, scroll through every page and keep your original until you are happy. If an image-based rebuild was needed, a text-preserving version with fewer pages may also be offered.
How Does It Work?
Understanding what happens behind the scenes helps you trust the tool — especially with confidential files.
🧭 Method 1 — qpdf structural rebuild
qpdf parses the file much like a desktop PDF tool. When an xref entry points to the wrong place, it scans the entire file for obj markers, rebuilds the cross-reference table, recovers the trailer and corrects bad stream lengths, then writes a fresh, consistent PDF.
📖 Method 2 — pdf.js + pdf-lib page rebuild
pdf.js, a very forgiving PDF reader, works out how many pages can still be loaded. pdf-lib, which reads objects in sequence instead of trusting the xref table, then copies every page it can parse into a brand-new document. Pages that cannot be copied are skipped and reported.
🖼️ Method 3 — image-based recovery
If the text-preserving methods cannot recover the pages, pdf.js renders each readable page to a high-resolution image (about 144 dpi) and those images become a new PDF. The pages look the same, but their text is no longer selectable or searchable.
✅ Verification and honest reporting
Every result is reopened with pdf.js and its pages are counted before it is offered. The tool keeps the result with the most recovered pages, prefers results that keep text, and tells you plainly what was fixed and what could not be recovered.
Key Features & Advantages
Three repair methods in one
qpdf, pdf.js + pdf-lib and an image-based rebuild run automatically, one after another, until your pages are recovered.
Fixes broken PDF structure
Rebuilds damaged cross-reference tables, missing or truncated trailers, wrong byte offsets and incorrect stream lengths.
Clear repair summary
See which method worked, pages recovered versus pages detected, whether text is selectable and the exact warnings that were reported.
Detects non-PDF files
Spots files that are really web pages, Office documents, images or empty files renamed to .pdf, and explains what they are.
Private repair
The damaged file is processed on your own device and never uploaded — important when the document is confidential.
Free with no watermark
No signup and no limits. Repaired files contain only your pages, with no branding added.
Who Uses This Tool?
This is one of the most common document tasks in work, study and everyday life. Here are the people who use it every day.
📥 Anyone with a failed download
Interrupted downloads and unstable connections leave PDFs truncated. Repair recovers every page that reached your device and rebuilds the index that should have been at the end.
💼 Office workers after a crash
When an editor or laptop crashes while saving, the cross-reference table is often left half-written. Rebuilding it brings the document back without re-creating it.
🎓 Students with corrupted assignments
Files copied from a USB stick or saved during a power cut can refuse to open the night before a deadline. Recovering the readable pages can save hours of work.
⚖️ Legal & finance teams
Scanned contracts and statements that pass through email gateways or document-management systems sometimes arrive damaged. Repair restores them for review and archiving without uploading confidential data.
⚙️ Developers & testers
PDFs generated by scripts or edited by hand often end up with wrong xref offsets or stream lengths. The technical details in the summary show exactly what qpdf found broken.
🗄️ IT support & archivists
Files rescued from failing drives, old backups or data-recovery software are frequently damaged. Repair shows quickly what can still be saved.
Common Use Cases
The everyday situations that bring people to this tool.
⚠️ "The file is damaged and could not be repaired"
This well-known Adobe Acrobat error usually means a broken xref table or trailer — exactly the structural damage Method 1 rebuilds.
⏸️ Interrupted or partial downloads
A PDF that stopped downloading part-way is missing its end, where the xref table and trailer live. Repair rebuilds them and recovers the pages that arrived.
🚫 Portals rejecting the file as invalid
Upload forms that validate PDFs reject damaged files. A cleanly rewritten copy usually passes the check.
🌐 Opens in one app but not another
Browsers are forgiving and may display a damaged PDF that Acrobat or a printer refuses. Repairing it makes the file readable everywhere.
💾 Files from USB drives or recovered disks
Storage errors corrupt parts of a file. Repair keeps the readable pages and tells you which ones could not be saved.
🧪 PDFs produced by buggy software
Hand-edited or script-generated PDFs often have wrong offsets or stream lengths. qpdf rewrites them into a standards-compliant file.

Tips & Best Practices
✅ Try downloading the file again first
If the PDF came from a website or an email, a fresh download is the best repair: it gives you the complete file instead of recovering part of one.
✅ Keep the original damaged file
Save the repaired copy under a new name. If a better copy turns up later, or you want to try another approach, you still have the original.
✅ Check every page after repairing
Scroll through the repaired PDF. Blank or partly drawn pages mean that content was missing from the damaged file, not that the repair went wrong.
✅ Prefer text-preserving results
If an image-based rebuild was needed, a text-preserving version with fewer pages may also be offered. Keep whichever suits you, or combine pages from both with Merge PDF and Organize PDF.
✅ Unlock password-protected files first
Encrypted PDFs cannot be repaired without their password. Remove it with Unlock PDF using the password you know, then repair the unlocked copy.
✅ Shrink the file afterwards if needed
Rebuilt and image-based files can be larger than the original. Use Compress PDF to reduce the size before sharing.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Repair PDF free?
Yes — it is 100% free with no signup, no watermark and no limit on the number of files. Ads on the page keep the tool free.
Is my PDF uploaded to a server?
No. All three repair methods run inside your browser. The damaged file and the repaired copy never leave your device.
What kinds of damage can it fix?
Structural damage: a broken or missing cross-reference (xref) table, a truncated or missing trailer, wrong byte offsets, incorrect stream lengths and stray bytes before the PDF header. These are the most common causes of “file is damaged” errors.
Can it recover pages that are missing from the file?
No. If part of the file was never saved or downloaded, the pages stored there no longer exist and no tool can recreate them. The repair recovers every page whose data is still in the file.
Why is the text in my repaired PDF not selectable?
That only happens when Method 3 was needed: the pages could be displayed but not rebuilt structurally, so they were saved as images. The summary tells you when this happened, and a text-preserving version with fewer pages may also be offered.
The tool says my file is not a PDF. Why?
The file probably has a .pdf name but different content — for example an HTML error page saved when a download link expired, or a Word document renamed to .pdf. Download the file again or open it with the right application.
Can it repair a password-protected PDF?
Not while it is locked, because its contents are encrypted. If you know the password, remove it first with Unlock PDF and then repair the unlocked copy.
Will repairing reduce the quality of my PDF?
Methods 1 and 2 keep your pages, text and images exactly as they were stored. Only the image-based Method 3 re-renders pages, at about 144 dpi, which looks sharp on screen and in normal printing.
It says no damage was found, but my PDF still looks wrong. Why?
Then the structure of the file is fine and the problem lies in the content itself — for example a corrupted image, a missing font or a page that was saved blank. A structural repair cannot change content.
Why does the repaired file have fewer pages than expected?
Some pages were too damaged to read, or their data was missing from the file. The summary shows how many pages were recovered compared with how many were detected.
Is a successful repair guaranteed?
No tool can guarantee it. Files with a broken index but intact objects usually repair perfectly; files that were heavily truncated or overwritten may only partly recover, or not at all — and the tool says so honestly.
Is there a file size limit?
There is no fixed limit, but the repair happens in your device's memory, so very large PDFs are best repaired in a desktop or laptop browser.
